Adding new information
To provide, or correct, information about people, documents, places and dates in EE, please with your suggestion. Your contribution will be peer-reviewed and will be credited in EE.
Biographical information
You may be able to identify or extend our knowledge of people who appear in EE. For example:
- tell us more about Bethia (1757–1839) and Christine Alexander (1762–1845), daughters of the Scottish banker and secret agent William Alexander (1729–1819);
- identify Francis Atkins, who calls himself the 'entire Friend' of John Locke around 1656 but is otherwise unknown
Dating of documents
You may be able to fix the date for documents in EE that the editors of our source editions could not determine at the time. For example:
- can Daniel Defoe's letter to Robert Harley, earl of Oxford be more precisely dated than simply "October 1712"?
- was Alexander Pope's letter of "Aug. 9th" to Allen Bathurst, 1st Earl Bathurst written in 1739, as his editor surmised, or in another year?
Locating correspondents
You may be able to identify the location for correspondents in EE:
- in most cases where a street address appears, no town is given;
- over half the original letters contain neither the author's nor the recipient's address
Translations
You may be able to provide translations of letters in EE — not only into English, but also from English into other languages. For example, a number of letters written by Americans in France have already been provided with translations into French.
